What is an HS code?

The Harmonized System (HS) is the worldwide product code used by customs in more than 200 countries. The first 2 digits are the chapter (for example 09 = coffee, tea and spices), the first 6 digits are the same in every country, and India adds 2 more digits — the 8-digit ITC(HS) code.

How it connects to these rules: India decides whether a product is free, restricted or prohibited for import or export by its HS code. The chapters shown are where this product group is classified — always check the exact 8-digit code of your product, because rules can differ within a chapter.

Example: turmeric is in chapter 09 (heading 0910); its full 8-digit code depends on the form — fresh, dried or powder.
